Subject: Support Indigenous Rights
Dear Prime Minister:
One of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to be adopted and implemented as a framework for reconciliation.
Your government has an opportunity to act on this recommendation by supporting Bill C-262, An Act to ensure that the laws of Canada are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Bill commits Canada to engage in a contemporary approach to Indigenous Peoples based on good faith and on the principles of justice, democracy, equality, non-discrimination, good governance and respect for human rights.
It also commits the government to taking appropriate measures – legislative, policy and administrative, in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to achieve the goals of the UN Declaration.
I believe these are important steps to achieving true and lasting reconciliation.
I ask you to support Bill C-262 and to ask the members of your caucus for their support. Thank you.
