Ask the Prime Minister and his government to support Bill C-262 on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

In 2007, the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. One of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called for the Declaration to be adopted and implemented as a framework for reconciliation.

The government has said they will put in place the Commission’s recommendations and this is an opportunity for them to act on one of them. The Declaration could be the basis for establishing a long overdue new relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples.

You can help hold the government to account for its promises.

Subject: Support Indigenous Rights

Dear Prime Minister:

One of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to be adopted and implemented as a framework for reconciliation.

Your government has an opportunity to act on this recommendation by supporting Bill C-262, An Act to ensure that the laws of Canada are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Bill commits Canada to engage in a contemporary approach to Indigenous Peoples based on good faith and on the principles of justice, democracy, equality, non-discrimination, good governance and respect for human rights.

It also commits the government to taking appropriate measures – legislative, policy and administrative, in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to achieve the goals of the UN Declaration.

I believe these are important steps to achieving true and lasting reconciliation.

I ask you to support Bill C-262 and to ask the members of your caucus for their support. Thank you.

Your message will be copied automatically to the Member of Parliament in your riding, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott
