Trans Justice Newsletter

National Epidemic of Anti-Trans Violence

Dear Friends and Partners,

Thank you for checking out our latest issue of the Trans Justice Newsletter. At the time this newsletter was submitted for publication, the Human Rights Campaign reported on at least 31 deaths of trans people this year, mostly Black trans women, in the United States. HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiative stands in solidarity with the entire community in mourning the lives lost and in our commitment to changing minds and policies that lead to violence against us and seek to minimize our very existence. Be on the lookout for our next TJI Newsletter which will have more details about our Trans Day Of Remembrance (TDOR) virtual event and Trans Week of Awareness events leading up to TDOR.

In solidarity,
Tori Cooper

My vote is My voice

Remember #MyVoteIsMyVoice

2020 has been a dizzying year filled with highs and lows for the trans community. One of this year’s highs is the hybrid virtual National Trans Visibility March (NTVM) which took place on October 3. The Transgender Justice Initiative (TJI) is partnering with NTVM for a series of GetOutTheVote events reminding everyone that #MyVoteIsMyVoice. There were many events over the week leading up to the march with webinars and watch parties taking place all over the country covering topics relevant to the trans community.

Covid-19 What trans People Need to Know About Coronavirus

The impact of COVID-19 on the LGBTQ community.

In partnership with PSB Research, the Human Rights Campaign has been tracking the impact of COVID-19 on the LGBTQ community. In March, HRC released a research brief highlighting how the lives and livelihoods of the LGBTQ community are at particular risk due to COVID-19. Within the LGBTQ community, many at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities are at even higher risk of facing the economic fallout from COVID-19. HRC released data in May documenting the disproportionate impact of both the virus and its economic consequences on LGBTQ people of color, who are more likely than their white LGBTQ counterparts to have become unemployed or reduced their work hours. New data, released in partnership with PSB Research, now demonstrates the real, devastating economic impact of COVID-19 on the transgender community, especially transgender people of color.
