Help Protect Canada's Largest Inland Sea

Hudson Bay is losing ice faster than most parts of the Arctic.

That doesn’t just make it harder for polar bears to hunt. It also means there are more ships in Canada’s great inland sea.

The federal government has identified a huge stretch of Hudson Bay that could be protected as a National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA).

This could help ensure the survival of belugas, polar bears, sea birds and other species which are under increasing pressure from the changes in the Arctic.

Federal protection could also help maintain and enhance local livelihoods, bolster the region’s tourism industry, create new jobs and bring infrastructure investments.

Sadly, the process is stalled.

Help protect Hudson Bay! Tell the Prime Minister it is past time to get moving on the Western Hudson Bay NMCA.

Dear Prime Minister:

Hudson Bay is the world’s largest northern inland sea. It is home to a third of the world’s beluga whales and a stronghold for polar bears. And it is losing ice faster than any other Arctic area.

I urge you to swiftly launch an initiative with local communities, First Peoples, and stakeholders to design a National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) that will:

- Protect species at risk including belugas and polar bears.
- Secure cherished cultures and ways of life for Indigenous and other regional peoples.
- Create jobs, bolster tourism and provide investments in infrastructure 
- Minimize environmental impacts of shipping and other commercial activities.

The Government of Canada acknowledged the importance of this site in 2017 when it established the Western Hudson Bay candidate NMCA.

It is time to kickstart this stalled process.
