Honourable
Bernadette
Jordan
Department of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
Dear Minister Jordan, I would like to express my full support for comprehensive protection of the Pacific Deepsea Oasis, formally known as the Offshore Pacific Area of Interest. Consistent with the new Marine Protected Area standards, regulations must prohibit oil and gas exploration, deep sea mining, dumping and bottom trawling. Providing top-to-bottom protection for the incredible marine species and habitat found in the Pacific Deepsea Oasis will help to safeguard this national ecological treasure. Designating this area as a Marine Protected Area will require meaningful engagement with First Nations, including on a co-governance model that will support Indigenous Peoples’ rights and vision for conservation. In 2003, the federal government recognized the value of this area by designating the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents as one of the first MPA in Canada. Science now shows this globally significant area for biodiversity and wildlife extends far beyond the current boundaries of the MPA. Designating the Deepsea Oasis as a Marine Protected Area will be a significant step towards Canada's pledge to protect 25 per cent of the ocean by 2025, and 30 per cent by 2030. Sincerely,
