Petition: cut benefits red tape for dying people

Every day ten people die while waiting for the benefits they need. Currently, terminally ill people can only get fast access if they are told they have six months or less to live. Please sign the #Scrap6months petition to change the law, so that all dying people can get benefits quickly and easily.

Petition: change the law so that everyone with a terminal illness can access the welfare benefits they need quickly and sensitively.

The Special Rules for Terminal Illness fast-track process for claiming benefits helps people living with a terminal illness to access the benefits they need quickly and sensitively.

However, to access the Special Rules fast-track a doctor or nurse needs to sign a form stating their patient has a 'reasonable expectation of death within six months'. This unfairly excludes many people coping with an unpredictable terminal illness like motor neurone disease (MND).

We call on the UK Government to remove the requirement of a ‘reasonable expectation of death within six months’, and instead allow clinicians to use their judgment of whether a person is terminally ill without reference to an arbitrary time limit. This would ensure that everyone coping with a terminal illness can access the support they need as quickly as possible.
