Julián Carrillo was shot to death in Mexico for defending his Indigenous community's territory.
On 24 October 2018, Julián Carrillo, a defender of the environment and the Rarámuri Indigenous people in the community of Coloradas de la Virgen was shot to death.
Since 2015, more than a dozen other Rarámuri Indigenous environment defenders have been killed in the Tarahumara mountains of northern Mexico. Like Julián, all have spoken out to denounce illegal logging, mining and drug crops that threaten the forests and ancestral territory on which Rarámuri lives depend.
The community of Coloradas de la Virgen has good reason to fear more attacks. They need us to speak up with them to call for action. The situation is urgent. The danger is ever present.
