With the longest coastline of any country in the world, and less than 1.3%  of our oceans under any form of meaningful protection, Canada’s rich marine ecosystems are at growing peril. CPAWS is calling on our governments to quickly complete protection of candidate areas and to establish networks of marine protected areas in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans.

Canada’s slow progress in establishing marine protected areas means the risks continue to grow for the marine ecosystems for which we, as a country, are directly responsible.

Completing Canada’s network of marine protected areas within this decade is necessary for the future wellbeing of our ocean, economy and communities. It’s entirely achievable; but it will take a stronger commitment from all levels of government, as well as industry and local communities, than we’ve witnessed thus far.

Speak up now and let the federal government know you want our ocean protected! So far, over 16,000 people have signed the pledge to support advancing marine conservation in Canada. Add your voice to help us reach our goal of establishing networks of marine protected areas and networks in our oceans!

What's an MPA?

A marine protected area (MPA) is a clearly defined area of coast or ocean that is legally protected for the long-term conservation of species and habitats. The level of protection can vary across MPAs by dividing the MPA into management 'zones', which can range from fully protected (no fishing or industrial uses), to areas where some sustainable uses are permitted.

As all life in the ocean is interconnected, MPAs allow for the protection of many different species and habitats that are necessary to keep our ocean ecosystems healthy. A network of MPAs will protect the web of life in Canada's ocean, from deepwater corals and sponge reefs, to the great ocean going whales, to cliff top bird colonies, and schools of fish, from the Arctic to the Pacific to the Atlantic.

If you've already signed on to protect our ocean, write a letter now to tell governments to meet its commitment of poretecting 10% of our ocean by 2020.

Sign the pledge:

"I support protecting Canada's ocean. I urge governments to move towards meeting its commitment to protect 10% of the ocean by 2020 through a network of marine protected areas."
