Tell Texas' senators to back asset forfeiture reform!
Lately it seems like the US Congress can't accomplish anything. But to the surprise of nearly everyone, the US House of Representatives has passed bipartisan reform legislation for federal asset-forfeiture that deserves broad support!
Created to go after drug kingpins, asset forfeiture is these days used too broadly, and local governments have become too dependent on the revenue. A couple of years ago, for the first time, the amount the government seized in private assets exceeded the total amount taken by burglars.
That's why Just Liberty is so glad to see bipartisan movement on Capitol Hill. In essence, the amendments from the Republican-controlled House would de-fund efforts by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to ramp up small-time seizures in partnership with local law enforcement which had been curtailed under the prior Administration.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," is the message here. There's no urgent need to expand asset forfeiture and lots of good arguments, from both sides of the aisle, for rolling back its use. Learn more here.
Please take a moment to email Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz to ask that they support this important bipartisan measure. Maybe Congress can accomplish SOMETHING this year!
