Everyone should be able to cross the road safely and easily.
That's why we need to demand #BetterCrossings.
"Most crossings still behave as if people are guests in the vehicles' world. It should be the other way around."
This is a quote from Living Streets Member, Georgia in Exeter - and it spells out exactly why we will be calling for #BetterCrossings in 2023.
Georgia is one of 3,000+ Members we polled about crossings recently. They told us:
- Waiting times for crossing signals to change were too long
- Time allowed to actually cross was too short
- Poor placement, bad design and layout
Altogether they paint a picture of crossings still prioritising drivers - and discourage walking. After all, as Howard from Hemel Hempstead puts it, insufficent crossings near him mean "its easier and safer to get in the car despite the town being only one mile away."
In 2023 we have to change this. If you agree, add your name today and support our Christmas Appeal.
