Dead seal at waters edge

Tell the Canadian government to end the seal slaughter

Climate change continues to destroy sea ice, resulting in a high mortality rate for newborn seals that need it to survive.

Yet the Canadian government still authorizes the cruel slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seals each year—even using government funds to finance the purchase of seal pelts. Each year, HSI witnesses conscious, wounded baby seals left to suffer in agony and impaled on metal hooks, dragged across the ice and cut open.

A 2010 poll asked sealers in Newfoundland how they felt about a federal sealing industry buyout and, of those that responded, 50% said they support this plan in which the seal hunt would be ended, sealers would receive financial compensation, and economic alternatives would be developed.

Please ask Canada’s Prime Minister and Privy Council to end the slaughter once and for all with a federal sealing industry buyout.
