Peace and Security

Hiroshima Nagasaki graphic

Hiroshima Nagasaki – Never Again! Attend a commemoration event near you.

August 6, 1945. August 9, 1945.

Seventy-four years ago, the United States dropped nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two of the most horrific acts of warfare in history. This August, we remember the estimated two hundred thousand or more civilian men, women and children who died. We remember those who survived the bombing but suffered radiation poisoning, infections, severe burns, deadly cancers, and birth defects in infants.

"Each person who died had a name. Each person was loved by someone," said survivor Setsuko Thurlow at the UN.

We remember so that we can prevent that atrocity from happening again. And yes, it could happen again, even here in the United States.

Join PSR chapters and other organizations around the country as we commemorate the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and urge our leaders to prevent such a horror from ever happening again.

House of Representatives Rebuffs Trump Administration in Key Defense Spending Votes

On July 12, the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act, to the tune of $733 billion. During NDAA deliberations, the House voted on a plethora of foreign policy and nuclear weapons-related amendments. PSR was adamantly opposed to an amendment introduced by Representative Mike Turner (R-OH) that would have reinstated funding for the deployment of the "more usable," "low-yield" nuclear warheads. The House rejected Turner's amendment, 221-201.

Working in Diverse Communities

Climate change does not strike everyone equally. Poor people, black and brown people, and people living on the frontlines suffer "first and worst." How does PSR partner with these communities to fight the climate crisis? Learn more in this PSR and Peoples Climate Movement "virtual town hall" webinar.

Hear about Oregon PSR's work in a powerful coalition led by Native Americans… PSR/Los Angeles' work in multiethnic, multiracial, multilingual urban communities… and how PSR/Iowa works in a rural, red state. (Hint: At the county fair!) Thursday, July 25th, 2019. 2:00 - 3:30 pm eastern.

Procedural Win Will Allow Time to Protect Communities from LNG

PSR’s recent letter helped win an extension of the comment period for the proposal to allow transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail. The extension will give us time to register our concerns about the danger to life and limb of hauling highly flammable LNG through U.S. communities. Read our letter, cosigned by 77 other organizations—and watch for a future alert inviting you to submit comments.
