Hi supporter,

I hope you’re staying safe and well.

There are different tests that are used to diagnose and monitor asthma and help make sure that you receive the right treatment. One of these is a FeNO test

FeNO stands for fractional exhaled nitric oxide and the test measures levels of nitric oxide when you breathe out.

Nitric oxide is produced in your lungs when your airways are inflamed because you’re allergic to something you’ve breathed in. This means that a FeNO test can help work out what type of asthma you have (allergic or non-allergic). It can also help to confirm or rule out asthma when your diagnosis is unclear.

We’ve put together a new video, explaining what a FeNO test is and how it works, with the help of our in-house GP, Dr Andy. Take a watch!

FeNO tests aren’t normally used in routine appointments to monitor your asthma. But they might be used in specialist clinics if your specialist thinks it’s useful for you. And you can always ask your GP or asthma nurse if they think FeNO would be beneficial.

I hope you find this useful.

Best wishes,

Jessica Kirby
