The cost of housing has risen beyond all reason. We wouldn’t accept it with anything else, so why accept it with housing?

The ongoing recession in the UK has exposed the critical state of the housing market. The collapse in lending and in house prices has led to a severe drop in private housing supply and poses serious challenges for the housebuilding industry.

We believe the opportunity exists to provide additional social housing and thereby stem the loss of further construction industry jobs, skills and housebuilding capacity. We propose investing significant additional money in building 100,000 new social rented homes over the next two years.

Based on National Housing Federation projections, an additional investment of £6.35 billion over the next two years would build these 100,000 new social rented homes; 20,000 on top of the original Government target.

Please email your MP to ask them to write to the Government to call on them to commit to this investment in the next Budget. Fill out the form below and register your support.

We are one of the richest countries in the world, and yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded, or dangerous. Many others have lost their home altogether. Bad housing robs us of security, health and a fair chance in life. Shelter campaigns for new laws and policies aimed at ending this national scandal. You can help by joining us to campaign at a national, regional and local level.
