Five years after ceasing live animal exports - during which sheep suffer from hunger, stress, disease and often death - the New Zealand government is considering resuming the live trade to Saudi Arabia. It's a deadly journey that lasts more than 20 days.
A backwards step for animal welfare
New Zealand is currently slaughtering locally and exporting frozen and chilled meat, sparing animals from a completely unneccessary 20 day journey to Saudi Arabia.
If this trade continues thousands of sheep will endure the often fatal cruelty associated with long distance transport. Those that survive the journey are not even guaranteed a humane end.
