 Important updates for Canadian campaign:
Media attention following the launch of the Handle with Care campaign prompted Canada's Minister of Agriculture to commit to regulation changes that would include the ability to deny export permits when animal transport does not comply with federal requirements. Canada's 30-year old regulations are badly in need of revision.
Please send a letter to the Minister thanking him for his commitment and encouraging him to stop the long distance transport of animals to slaughter.
Currently, under Canada's Health of Animals Regulations:
Pigs, poultry and horses, may be transported 36 hours without food, water or rest.
Cattle, sheep and goats, may be transported up to 52 hours with no access to food, water or rest.
Cattle may be transported without being fed up to 81 hours.
Canada's allowable transport times are among the longest in the industrialized world.
It's about time Canada updated its animal transport regulations to reduce transport times and stop the long distance transport of animals for slaughter.
