Justice for the Tokyo Two
Over the past months international peaceful protests have been taking place around the world - calling for justice for Greenpeace Japan activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki, and justice for the whales. Junichi and Toru were charged in June 2008 with theft and trespass after they exposed a major scandal around the embezzlement of whale meat from the Japanese government-sponsored whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Sometime later this year the Tokyo Two, as they've since become known, will finally stand trial. They are charged with theft of whale meat and trespass – charges that are so culturally sensitive in Japan that they can lead to up to 10 years in jail. Meanwhile Greenpeace faces the threat of its operations in Japan being closed down.
Please help us to keep up the pressure for their acquittal. Write to the Japanese ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Mr Shin Ebihara, and express your concern at Japan's harassment of Junichi and Toru. Remind him that their only crime has been to expose the corruption that lies at the heart of Japan's whaling industry, and that it was members of the so-called 'scientific' whaling fleet who were found to be embezzling large amounts of prime whale meat for their own personal gain.
