A third runway makes no sense

As expected, the government has given the go-ahead for a third runway at Heathrow airport. As the effects of climate change begin to be felt around the world, this decision makes about as much sense as a cat flap in an elephant house and leaves Gordon Brown's environmental credentials in tatters.

A new runway is completely unnecessary and will make Heathrow the biggest single emitter of carbon dioxide in the UK. All the concessions the government appears to be offering - such as a high-speed rail link and money for research into 'cleaner' jet engines - are just greenwash. Nothing can make a new runway clean, green or environmental friendly, it's as simple as that.

Write to Gordon Brown and tell him what you think about this utterly insane decision. We'd like you to write your own letter as it will be more effective than sending the same one as everyone else, but there are some ideas for what to include below.

The letter will also be copied to your MP so they know your feelings on the subject as well.

(If you live outside the UK, you can also send a message to Gordon Brown.)

If you have time, you could also send a fax to 020 7925 0918 or call the Number 10 switchboard on 020 7930 4433.

Don't forget, we've also bought the land for their new runway from under their noses and frankly, we're not giving it back.

Dear Prime Minister

What to say

  • If you've joined the thousands of people in our Airplot as a beneficial owner of our land on the third runway site, make sure you mention that you're already standing in the way of a new third runway. (If you're not, click the opt-in box above.)
  • Remind Mr Brown that there is no such thing as a green runway. Small increases in engine efficiency can never compensate for the massive increase in greenhouse gas emissions a third runway will bring, and neither can a high-speed rail link.
  • The proposed emissions caps are not legally binding.
  • Given all the history of broken promises on airport expansion, there is no way the government will build a new runway and then close or restrict its use once the emissions caps are breached.
  • Off-setting emissions from a new runway with electric cars is nonsense. We need to reduce emissions in both aviation and road transport, not use one to off-set the other.
  • If this decision is going to affect your vote at the next general election, drop that in as well.
