No New Coal! Tell Ed Miliband to accept Lord Turner's recommendations

Lord Turner's Committee on Climate Change recommended this week that new coal plants are not built in the UK unless they can capture all of their emissions by the early 2020s. If accepted by the government, the proposal would kill controversial plans by German energy giant Eon to build a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

Energy and climate change minister Ed Miliband is the man charged with implementing Turner's recommendations. Please write to him and and ask him to implement them as soon as possible - and to rule out building any new climate-wrecking coal-fired power stations.

Dear Minister Miliband,

I am writing to ask that you act with utmost speed on the recommendations of Lord Turner's committee on climate change.  It is clear that Monday’s announcement means the end of plans for new unabated coal plants, like the proposed new plant at Kingsnorth.  What is now needed so we can move forward with our efforts to tackle climate change and ensure energy security, is clarity in the marketplace and a framework that gives utilities, investors and other countries a clear policy route map for the coming years.

Lord Turner indicated that an Emissions Performance Standard (EPS) could be the policy mechanism that does this.  An EPS that rules out any prospect of unabated new coal would provide a clear framework in which utilities investors and policy makers could operate.  The proposal is already being discussed at the EU level and could easily be adopted as a means of ruling out unabated new coal across Europe.

As a first step, rapid implementation of Lord Turner's recommendations is essential, followed by strategies that will actually deliver our renewables energy and efficiency targets for 2020.  The climate act puts the UK at the forefront of global action on climate change.  Your task now is turn the rhetoric into reality.
