Take Action - Access to treatment and medications

The CSPA is deeply concerned that Canadians do not have equitable access to medications and treatments. Here are some important facts:

  • Depending upon where you live, your access to effective treatments may be limited by a number of possible factors:
    • which treatments your provincial government has agreed to list on the provincial formulary – this varies from province to province
    • whether or not you can afford to travel to get access to the centre providing treatment
    • which treatments your specialist will discuss with you, because he or she knows there are access issues.
  • Canadians lag well behind people in other countries in terms of access to new, effective and ground breaking treatments for skin diseases
  • Due to our rigourous drug approval system and the many layers of government, it can take years for a drug to get approved and then even once approved, it can still take more years to get it listed on a provincial formulary or benefit program

We need to let our elected officials know that, as skin patients, we need access to all available and approved medications, no matter where we live.

We need the process for approval to include patients, and decisions to be made not based on dollars, but on impact on quality of life.

The CSPA is forming a committee to work on an advocacy/communications program to address these discrepancies. Interested in getting involved? Join our team – email us.
