Biofuels fuelling deforestation: let's make it a Parliamentary Issue!
The Government continues to increase the use of biofuels in transport fuel.
But it is ignoring evidence that they're harmful rather than helpful to the environment.
Harmful not helpful
Research shows that the rush for biofuels:
* Causes deforestation and biodiversity loss in producer countries.
* Threatens local people's livelihoods and their food supply.
* Increases greenhouse gas emissions instead of reducing them.
Despite the compelling evidence against biofuels, the UK Government is continuing the rush for biofuels in the UK including here in Scotland.
Instead we need better public transport, greener cars and incentives to get people cycling and walking.
Let's get biofuels debated in Parliament
There is a new Parliamentary Petition (also known as an Early Day Motion) on biofuels with cross-party support open for MPs to sign onto. The petition calls on government to stop increasing its use of biofuels and to promote greener transport alternatives. You can check it out here.
The more MPs that sign the petition, the more of a difference we can make in letting the government know we don't want transport solutions that cause deforestation and human rights abuses!
