LET ASYLUM SEEKERS WORK

In times of economic difficulty, it is even more important to stand up for the most vulnerable people in our society.

Asylum seekers come to the UK to seek sanctuary from persecution, not to find a job. They want to rebuild their lives, and are prepared to support themselves and their families. Yet they are prevented from working and find themselves forced to rely on benefits. If their claim fails and they are unable to return home, they face destitution.

We want the government to allow asylum seekers to work if they have been waiting longer than six months for a full resolution on their asylum claim. Until 2002, asylum seekers could work if they’d been waiting longer than six months for an initial decision on their claim from the Home Office.

We want the government to ensure that permission to work remains for people whose claim for asylum is refused, but who are unable to return home through no fault of their own.

We call on the government to allow people seeking asylum to work.
