Back the ban: Say no to the horror of live animal export

Since the Handle with Care campaign was launched, the world is waking up to the unnecessary cruelty of transporting animals over long distances for slaughter.

Please act now to support a ban on live cattle exports from Belém, one of Brazil’s busiest ports. Horrifying conditions on the three-week journey to Lebanon cause many animals to die from heat stroke, trauma and respiratory disease.

Let’s tell Brazil – and the world – that this cruelty won’t be tolerated.

Live animal exports from the port were suspended when Public Prosecutor, Benedito Wilson Sá, successfully argued that the trade causes great animal suffering, as well as damaging the environment, discouraging tourism and destroying business for local slaughterhouses.

His success is ground-breaking: this is the first time ever that animal welfare has been a factor when halting live animal exports from a port.

One appeal by the export industry has already been defeated, but more are planned. We need your help to make the suspension a permanent ban and influence two further Brazilian ports to stop exporting live animals.

Show your support

Help keep Belém port closed to live animal exports and save over 100,000 cattle a year from intense suffering. Show your support for a permanent ban by sending Benedito Wilson Sá this email of encouragement, copying in the President of the State Assembly and State Governor.

Dear Benedito Wilson Sá

As a supporter of the international Handle with Care campaign against the cruel long distance transport of live animals for slaughter, I wanted to say thank you for the legal action you are taking in Para State to try and end this trade, and let you know you have my support.

The scientific evidence produced by the Handle with Care campaign makes it clear there is no humane way to transport live farm animals long distances. And the live trade is totally unnecessary when chilled and frozen meat has been transported around the world for over 125 years.

Live exports weaken Brazil by exporting tax income, exporting jobs and making thousands of animals go through intense suffering. Long distance transport also increases the risk of spreading diseases, compromising Brazil’s sanitary status.

Thank you for helping to end this cruelty. Good luck with your legal action.
