Don't Lift the Moratorium on Commercial Whaling!
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned all commercial whaling. As a result, the number of whales killed every year was drastically reduced. Yet even today several rogue nations continue to hunt and slaughter whales.
There is no excuse for continuing to allow this barbaric and outdated practice, especially as other threats to whales -- like pollution and climate change -- increase. Nonetheless, whaling nations are pushing to suspend the moratorium and allow for whales to be legally killed again – even in designated sanctuaries.
World leaders are meeting right now to discuss the fate of whales. Please join us in calling on them to support strengthening the moratorium and fulfilling the conservation mandate of the IWC. Now, more than ever, whales need to be protected.
TAKE ACTION
Send a message to your country's officials today -- the IWC meeting will end on Friday, and a deal that would allow the slaughter of whales could be proposed at any time.
STEP 1: Select your country from the list below to find details for your country's IWC commissioner. If your country is not part of the IWC, you can write to U.S. President Obama, as the United States has been a key supporter of this compromise.
