The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) represents around 1900 staff at The Student loans Company (SLC). We are asking for your support for our campaign to stop the cuts that will have a huge impact on services provided to the public and on the city of Glasgow itself in the current economic climate.
On 27 January staff were told without warning that 150 jobs would be axed as a result of severe budget cuts being imposed by the parent department (BIS). This is more than 20% of the Glasgow workforce. Members and their families are shocked and angry, and do not believe that these budget cuts are necessary.
Further the SLC also announced it intends to transfer 45 jobs from Glasgow Hillington site to Darlington in the North East of England. This unnecessary cut increases the numbers of jobs under threat at Glasgow to almost 200. It is a sickening blow to the workforce that an employer could be so heartless and increase the misery for its own workers.
They feel that the Company is treating staff with contempt, particularly as there was no consultation whatsoever with PCS about possible alternatives to redundancy.
Please support our campaign and let your MP, MSP and local councillor know that you value our members and the important work that they do.
