The welfare reform campaign is now focused on lobbying members of parliament before the third reading stage on Tuesday 17 March.
Many parts of the welfare reform bill were unacceptable when they were first published and the worsening economic situation should lead to a fundamental rethink.
The government wants to hand more of the welfare state to the private sector. Proposals in the bill include the privatisation of employment services and the privatisation of the social fund. We believe it is wrong for the government to allow organisations to make a profit from the sick and unemployed.
We want jobs instead of punitive sanctions and increased conditionality. We fear the bill will drive people, including children, further into poverty and stigmatise those who need the most help.
Please take a minute to email your MP and ask them to oppose the government’s plans for welfare reform.
